Diamondbacks To Host NL Wild Card Game

Sep 25, 2017 7:28 AM

The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Sunday to secure home-field advantage in the National League Wild Card game.

J.D. Martinez notched the game-winning hit for the Diamondbacks, who acquired him on July 31 from the Detroit Tigers.

"This isn't it," he said. "They only get bigger from here. In my opinion, we are not in the playoffs yet. If we win that wild card, then we are in it."

The Diamondbacks, who won only 69 games a year ago but are 90-66 this season, were assured a playoff berth earlier in the day, when the St. Louis Cardinals lost at the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers was beaten at home by the Chicago Cubs.

Indians' Win Streak Broken At 22 Games

Sep 16, 2017 1:19 PM

The Cleveland Indians' 22-game win streak was snapped on Friday with a 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

The Indians hadn't lost a game since Aug. 23.

"They've been so supportive," said Terry Francona, who led his team out of the dugout to return the love to the crowd. "The atmosphere around here is incredible and I think our players wanted to show their appreciation. It's by no means the last game of the year or anything like that, it's just been pretty incredible how they've reacted and we just wanted to show our appreciation because we don't take it for granted.

"I don't think anything is over."

The Indians set a new league mark and came within four of matching the overall record held by the 1916 New York Giants, a 26-game string.
